  Marjorie Berger recently retired as Senior Vice President of Liability Claims at American Nuclear Insurers (ANI). ANI is an association of major insurance and reinsurance companies who pool capacity to provide third party liability insurance to the U.S. commercial nuclear power industry and reinsurance to nuclear facilities around the world. Ms. Berger was responsible for managing the defense of all nuclear liability claims asserted against ANI’s policyholders that are covered under the nuclear energy liability policies written by ANI. She worked closely with outside counsel, policyholders’ in-house counsel and experts to develop and implement defense strategies. During her tenure at ANI, Ms. Berger helped to expand the federal body of case governing nuclear liability claims. Ms. Berger was also responsible for overseeing ANI’s Emergency Response Program. Ms. Berger was at ANI for 15 years.. Prior to that, she worked on complex litigation matters first at Travelers Insurance Co. and then at RLI Corp. Ms. Berger began her legal career at the Hartford, CT law firm Updike, Kelly & Spellacy, where she concentrated in medical and legal malpractice defense and tried numerous cases to verdict. Ms. Berger received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology from Boston University and earned a law degree from the University of Connecticut. She is admitted to practice in Connecticut and New York and is a member of the American Bar Association. Ms. Berger serves on the Board of the Hartford County Bar Association and the Lawyer’s Committee of the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) and is also a member of the FDCC, the International Nuclear Law Association (INLA) and Women in Nuclear. She has spoken about the challenges of defending nuclear liability claims at NEI, ABA and INLA meetings. She has also participated in numerous workshops to educate federal, state and local officials and other nuclear industry stakeholders on the federal legislation and case law that governs nuclear liability issues.
