September 2019

Greetings, Diversity Committee Members!

Fall has just begun, but believe it or not, summer is almost here!  Okay, not really, but I needed to some way to talk about the 2020 Annual Meeting in Bermuda.  In particular, the Diversity Committee will be looking to present on a topic – probably in connection with another committee or two – and we need ideas both ideas for topics and presenters.  If you have an idea, or if you don’t have an idea but what to present anyway, let Joanne or me know.

Also, as Joanne and I kick off our tenure as Diversity Committee Co-Chairs, we are trying to shape the group in a way that meets your needs, and we look forward to your input.  To that end, we are asking each of you to send us a sentence or two about the impact of diversity at your law firm, in your practice, or for the FDCC.  (It can be more than a sentence if you feel so moved, but we know you’re busy.)

We will be in touch soon!

Exciting News!

The first recipient of the Diversity Award will be announced at the Annual Meeting in Sun Valley this year, we could not think of a more beautiful location to do so.  We hope that all of the members of FDCC will continue to nominate members that have devoted substantial time to increase the diversity in our membership.

If I stopped my article here, John Rahoy would have a fit, so on another topic of Diversity, the ABA finally published its long awaited for “Glance at Women in the Law”.  It is dated April 2019 and can be found online.  It contains some very interesting numbers.  For instance, based upon the 2019 US Consensus Bureau, of the people in the legal profession, 38% are women while 62% are men.  The percentage of women in Fortune 500 Corporations, acting as General Counsel, is 30% compared to 70% being men.

Meanwhile it appears men and women are about 50/50 in their enrollment in law schools.  In contrast, there appears to be approximately 33% women holding seats in federal courts in the U.S.  So women continue to make advances, but still have a long way to go to bring the different practice areas noted above up to the 50% represented in law schools.  Naturally, none of the numbers seem to account for women who leave the practice of law to raise children and then return at a later time, or those that get put on the “baby track” often used but not acknowledged at law firms and companies.

We are always looking for bright, talented women for FDCC membership, if you know of any, please submit their names to the FDCC so we can improve our numbers and help improve the position of women in the legal profession at the same time.  Stay tuned for more from your Diversity Committee.
